Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Meade LXD75 AR6-AT (f/8) Achromatic RefractorCustomer Review: The Meade LXD-75 with the AR6 Refractor Summary: 5 Stars
First, overall this is a great refractor for the price - the mount (LXD-75)is far above the best of its type. The optics are good for the price (two element main lens does cause some false color but a fully corrected lens would be two-three times as expensive a scope. The mount is half the system cost.)
The "GOTO" feature of the meade autostar guide system is easy to use (but the manual will scare anyone who reads it - don't let it! The real method is very simple once the mount is aligned to true north(that part is not so easy but if you take the time to read and understand the procedure and follow the instructions exactly it is straight forward and well worth the work. From then on, any visible object in the sky can be found by the computer with just a press of a button and the scope will even track the object (sky objects only!) automatically.))
Not only will the mount's computer suggest great objects AND move to them when told to but it displays great background info on the object.
However, as in all things, any first timer be warned, unless you set this mount to true north using the procedures in the manual, the "GOTO" feature will NOT work correctly and is not very useful(the mount has built into it a specil small telescope that was added just for this purpose and makes the whole procedure rather simple once you read and understand what they are asking you to do.)
Also, this is a refractor and will show great views of the larger planets (Mars only during near approches), the moon and a few deep sky objects (DSO)but it is only a 6" lens (really two lens put together) and will not collect as much light as a far "smaller sized" 8 inch cassegrain (but these cost a great deal more.) Do not buy this type of scope if you want to mostly see DSO's or need to move it great distances - get a smaller size (length/weight) cassegrain 8" on the LXD-75 mount. If you want a scope to use in/near a city, this is the better cost choice since your skys will be too bright except for viewing planets/moon, so this will work well in the city. If you need to carry it up/down a number of stairs, consider the lower cost AR5 refractor since it is lighter and will give similar views (but is just as big.)
Finally, this scope is for someone who has used telescopes or is willing to take the time to learn - it has every major feature anyone could want in a general use scope (except enough eyepieces - only one good low power eyepiece is suppied.) As in all things, read about telescopes before buying one so you have more than this very short and not too accurate review. This is a great instrument but is not a toy nor a scope you throw into the car and setup on a lark - it is for serious sky watching.
